HOW TO HANDLE A JOB REJECTION

By Emete Smart - 16:52

I opened my email and one of the first things I saw was

'We are sorry your application was not approved'

I should have been overwhelmed, confused and distraught at that moment but I wasn't. I was not quite excited about it but then, one thing made me feel cool about it and that is the fact that they must have seen something or considered some metrics before rejecting my application. Whatever it is, I know I am very good and resourceful and would assuredly work on my weak-points. So, I replied their email with a letter of gratitude. Hehehe. I can be weird sometimes. But, how do you stay all hyped even after a job rejection? How do you handle a job rejection? Here are some helpful tips below that helped me in dealing with that job rejection.

1. YOU ARE GREAT REGARDLESS

U-hun. The fact that you were rejected doesn't make you any less or low. And the candidate that was chosen over you isn't better or smarter than you. You just perhaps didn't meet some of their metrics which they considered while choosing who to employ. It could be the age factor, experience factor and whatnot. Whatever the reason is, you are still awesome, great and intelligent regardless. Whatever it is, it is their loss not yours because they just lost the chance to have one of the best persons in their firm. Well, we wish them luck, don't we? So whenever you are faced with a job rejection, always remember this.

2. FORGET ABOUT IT AND MOVE ON

Oh, do you think its that easy to forget? That was my dream job that slipped before my eyes and you're telling me to forget about it and move on?

Uhm, I just told you the plain truth though. No matter how dreamy the job is, you just have to accept that they just rejected you and therefore move on from it. In other words, close your mail and go get a drink or surf your favorite site. Hey, my blog is here for you, yunno! Do something else. And when you've taken your mind off it and are now well settled, you can then do the next point.

3. THINK OF WHY THEY MIGHT HAVE REJECTED YOU

No, don't overthink this. Don't give yourself high BP. Life is not that deep afterall. Simply sit and try and think of the reasons they might not have considered you worthy after all the effort you might have put into being the best for the position. Could it be that your cover letter was wack? Or you didn't do well do well during the interview? Or you didn't just meet up with their criteria or standard? If it is a job you're really passionate about and really want to work in, you could do some more research. If you have any staff connection, utilize it and ask questions. If you can, send an email humbly requesting why you weren't accepted. However, this is Nigeria and you may never be replied. Just try and think of how you can be better and avoid making same mistakes in the future.

4. APPLY FOR THE NEXT AVAILABLE JOB

Why cry over spilled milk? Simply open job sites and apply for the next available job. Don't stop applying till you get the job you want or a job that would put food on your table and still leave you with some change. It would bring you great joy when you finally get a great job. This would boost your ego and make you happy that you didn't let the rejection of the past weigh you down. Now you're winning. U-hun!

Every job hunter would be rejected at one point or the other. It's simply a normal phenomenon and how you handle and deal with the situation would determine how quicker you would get a better job. Stop beating yourself and try the points above.
