CAREER-WISE: HOW TO MAKE EVERYONE LOVE YOU AT WORK

By Emete Smart - 14:30

I lied! You can't possibly make everyone love you at work but you can win almost everyone to your side. If there are 10 people at work, one person must sha have comma which is quite inevitable but with most people on your side, you really have nothing to worry about. When the major amount includes your boss, you're riding a roller coaster! At work, I have little or no problem with almost everyone at work except for a particular fellow corp member who is quite jealous because her friend loves to hang around me mostly instead of her. Aside from that, I'm cool with everyone. How did I do this and how can you do this?

1. BE YOURSELF

No one likes a hypocrite. Being yourself is a win - win and would enable everyone know what you're capable of doing and what you aren't which is a sure way to win people at work to your side.

2. KNOW HOW TO PLAY THE GAME

The game here is knowing and understanding everyone. Now, I have three major bosses at work - the director, my Head of Department and the assistant Head of Department. I'm mostly in the office of the assistant Head of the Department and I almost never see the Director. When it comes to my HOD, I realized that she loves people who are calm and very serious. So, when I'm with her, I'm usually very calm and choose to be very serious at that moment. Of course, "Yes ma", "Okay ma" comes into play most times and the traditional "modest kneeling"(not absolute kneeling on the floor o. Just a little bent knees when she talks after-all, this is Nigeria). But when it comes to the assistant HOD, he likes a more playful and easy going person. That is exactly what I am whenever I am with him. It balls down to understanding who is who and playing the game smartly. That way, winning people at work won't be a problem.

3. AVOID GOSSIPS

You shouldn't just win your bosses, your co-workers are as important and its very important you avoid anything called "gossip". Gisting isn't a bad thing but gossiping, backbiting or trying to bring down a boss or a particular co-worker is a NO NO. If you're involved in such, you would only create a particular clique to yourself and have many haters at work and you really don't want that. The key is to be neutral and if any gossip is brought to you, simply laugh it off and avoid making sensitive comments. At the slightest opportunity, excuse yourself. Everyone would love you for being a neutral and simple person. Simplicity is the key.

4. EMPATHIZE AND BE HUMAN

Being neutral doesn't mean you should overlook the plight of others. Try and make everyone comfortable around you to the extent that they want to share their minds and personal issues with you. This could be burdensome at some point but it shows you're on the right track if everyone can trust you enough to divulge sensitive personal issues. Just last week, one of my boss was telling me about her breast cancer journey. When did I start work? But from the first day, my demeanor just made her fall so much in love me and she calls me her daughter. For a big madam to discuss such with me, I was touched and I really empathized with her and was grateful she is now okay. Funny enough, other people at work except for the assistant HOD didn't know about her journey. Two weeks ago, my assistant HOD discussed about his family and kids with me and welcomed my opinion. When people are comfortable around you, you're on the right track. Just don't be too quick to judge and have the right words always. The day I wasn't around, ALL my bosses covered up for me. So much love! That's what you get when you win everyone to yourself. Empathize and be human!

5. PLAY BUT BE SERIOUS!

There's a particular guy in my office who is a fellow Corper. Many of my fellow corp members don't like him because he can talk for Africa, play for Africa but zero actions. Don't be like that. I can play for Africa. I can be very naughty! But when it comes to work, I don't joke with it AT ALL. I would be so serious that you would be wondering if I can switch back to my playmode. Know when to play and when to be serious at work. If you can do the two simultaneously and at the right time, its just a matter of time before everyone falls helplessly in love with you!

These are my secrets. What other ways and attitudes can one display to make everyone love you at work?
